Abstract
General economic principles and healthcare economic principles in particular ore described, explained, and related to the current US system. Economic issues are explained in relationship to nurse anesthesia education as it exists in the current healthcare environment. Prior publications related to economics and nurse anesthesia are reviewed, critiqued, and related to the current healthcare system and the education of nurse anesthetists. Economic assumptions and other factors affecting the economics of nurse anesthesia education will be discussed in Part 2 of this 2-part column, which is scheduled for publication in the December 2004 AANA Journal
