Abstract
The effects of different strategies on university Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) students' learning of Chinese characters, differences in nonheritage & heritage students' perceptions of the effectiveness of such strategies, & whether CFL students' perceptions are predictors of CFL achievement test performance are examined. Questionnaires containing 11 statements regarding Chinese character learning strategies were completed (N = 150). Several findings are presented: students preferred writing assignments over reading exercises & practicing characters within the context of relevant vocabulary words; students generally valued strategies that emphasized the learning & use of character elements; differences in the heritage & nonheritage students' perceptions of learning strategies were generally insignificant; students who favored learning character elements rather than character stroke order produced higher achievement test scores. The implications of these findings in relation to relevant contemporary studies are discussed. 5 Tables, 2 Appendixes, 29 References. Adapted from the source document
