Abstract
The use of the Spanish synthetic future with second-person subject as a type of imperative in northern Andean dialects is examined. Intonational & contextual evidence is presented to show that constructions of the type darasmelo have the force of an entreaty or attenuated command, eg, 'I beg you to give it to me,' whereas pronoun suffixation establishes it within the Spanish imperative system. Complex sentences with negative infinitive clauses preserve the future of entreaty as the matrix verb. Antecedents are found in fifteenth-century Castilian literature, & the possible influence of a Quechua distinction between immediate & delayed or brusque & polite imperatives is considered. It is shown that in Ecuadorian dialects of Quechua, the future is used for a delayed or attenuated command. Spanish dialects using the future of entreaty typically express simple futurity by ir a + infinitive or haber de + infinitive. 37 References. J. Hitchcock
