Abstract
El concepto de "yo" queda entonces definido en Occidente como "a bounded, unique, more or less integrated motivational and cognitive universe, a dynamic center of awareness, emotion, judgment and action, organized into a distinctive whole and set contrastively against other such wholes and against a social and natural background", conformando una noción historica y peculiar en el contexte mundial (Geertz en Rose 225). Frente a esta construcción del sujeto unificado asociado a dicha modalidad visual, el Barroco aparece como la alternativa más poderosa, ofreciendo un régimen escópico propio que ha sido brillantemente conceptualizado por la filósofa Christine Buci-Glucksmann y el historiador de las ideas Martin Jay, siguiendo, en buena parte, ideas de Maurice Merleau-Ponty: Celebrating the dazzling, disorienting, ecstatic surplus of images in baroque visual experience, she [Buci-Glucksmann] emphasizes its rejection of the monocular geometricalization of the Cartesian tradition, with its illusion of homogeneous three-dimensional space seen with a God's eye view from afar. Ya en 1919 fue definida por T.S. Eliot en su ensayo "Hamlet and his problems" como "the only way of expressing emotion in the form of art [. . .], a set of objects, a situation, a chain of events which shall be the formula of that particular emotion; such that when the external facts, which must terminate in sensory emotion, are given, the emotion is immediately evoked" (124-125). Significantly, the mirror that it holds up to nature is not the flat reflecting glass that commentators like Edgerton and White see as vital in the development of rationalized or "analytic" perspective, but rather the anamorphosistic mirror, either concave or convex, that distorts the visual image-or more precisely, reveals the conventional, rather than natural quality of "normal" specularity by showing its dependence on the materiality of the medium of reflection.
