Abstract
This article describes the discipline of epidemiology and the application of epidemiologic methods to the study of children's language disorders. Epidemiology is described as the study of the distributions and determinants of diseases, disorders, disabilities, and desirable health events in populations. Thus epidemiologic research is shown to emphasize issues concerned with accuracy of diagnosis and the measurement of associations between exposure to potential causal agents and rates of health events defined by the diagnosis in carefully defined populations. Common epidemiologic research designs and methodologic issues are discussed and related to studies of child language disorder.
