Evaluation of the Patients with Influenza Viruses

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical and laboratory data of patients diagnosed with influenza based on their virus types and age.
Material and Methods: The complaints on admission, physical examination, laboratory and radiological findings and the treatments of children who received a diagnosis of influenza infection between 1st of January 2011 and 1st of April 2012 in the pediatrics outpatient service were compared.
Results: Two hundred and one (55.2%) of the patients who were diagnosed with Influenza A and B were male and 163 (44.8%) were female. The mean age was 5.89 +/- 3.37 years (1-19 yrs). 137 (37.6%) of the patients were diagnosed in 2011 and 227 (62.4%) were diagnosed in 2012. Influenza A was detected in 172 of them (47.3%) while Influenza B was detected in 192 (52.7%). In 2011, the number of patients who had Influenza A and B were 77 (56.2%) and 60 (% 43.8) respectively, while in 2012, those numbers were 95 (41.9%) and 132 (58.1%). The most frequent complaint was fever in 354 of the patients (68.6%) and the mean body temperature was 38.3 degrees C (36.2-41.0 degrees C). Body temperature of 243 (68.6%) patients was >= 38.0 degrees C. The laboratory and radiological findings of patients with Influenza A and B did not differ significantly. The most attention deserving hematological finding was lymphopenia with both virus types. Only 16 (4.4%) patients were hospitalized and 7 of these patients (43.7%) had Influenza A and 9 had Influenza B (56.3%). Oseltamivir was administered to 8 of the hospitalized patients (50.0%) and 158 of all patients (43.4%).
Conclusion: The number of patients with Influenza B infection increased from 2011 to 2012 and fever was the most frequent admission complaint.
