Abstract
Study of organizational commitment has been justified as a tool in enhancing organizational morale and employee's productivity. A strong commitment by employees to the organizational goal is assumed to have a profound impact on overall organizational performance. This study explores the relationships of job, organizational, and demographic characteristics with the organizational commitment of college and university internal auditors. Three survey instruments were used to measure organizational commitment and two control factors, job characteristics and organizational characteristics. In addition, the survey instrument also captured demographic variables about the respondents. Multiple linear regression models using 248 college and university internal auditors indicate that there are strong relationships between organizational commitment and job meaningfulness, the respondent's perception of the organization and other employees' attitudes toward the organization. Organizational tenure appears to have a positive influence over organizational commitment, and females seem to have a higher degree of organizational commitment than their male counterparts. The factors related to the organizational commitment of college and university auditors appear to be similar to those in other industries although some differences are registered between auditors in colleges and universities and other industries. Management implications are discussed.
