Abstract
Reviews literature published during the period 1990-1999 concerning postinstitutionalization family caregiving involvement. When a relative, often with cognitive impairment, enters a nursing home, family members often experience role ambiguity, stress, and caregiving challenges. Recommendations for future family caregiving studies include such topics as conjoint family-staff caregiver skill training, division of tasks between staff and family, and collaboration and negotiation skills for families in their cooperative efforts with nursing home staff.
