Abstract

A review of the literature on the fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is presented. Potential risks to the offspring in response to maternal alcohol ingestion are described. A case presentation, including both maternal and infant problems, emphasizes the physical, as well as emotional, aspects of care when FAS is anticipated prenatally or is encountered in the clinical setting. Recommendations for education and counseling are also discussed
