Abstract
Franz Emanuel Kuhnert (1852-1918) is presented as a distinguished Austrian astronomer & Sinologist; his education & professional career are outlined, & his research trip to China in 1892 is related. Kuhnert's (1893, 1894, & 1898) publications on the Nanking dialect are mentioned. The transcription system for vowels, consonants, & tones found in Kuhnert's monograph Syllabar des Nankingdialektes ([Syllabary of the Nanking Dialect] Vienna: Alfred Holder, 1898) is analyzed, & equivalent IPA (International Phonetic Association) values for his forms are determined. It is pointed out that Kuhnert's studies are the earliest known full descriptions of Nankingese phonetics & thus of great importance to research not only of this dialect but of the history of the Jiang-Huai dialect family as a whole. Kuhnert's transcription system can throw light on Nankingese pronunciation of the late 19th century. Z. Dubiel
