Abstract

Reconsiders the place of Mythologies within the writings of Roland Barthes, by looking at how the book took shape between 1952 and 1957 and by situating it with regard to statements Barthes made about it in 1970 and 1971. What Barthes disclosed 40 years ago as the two tiered mechanism that conveyed shared assumptions as true and naturally occurring remains as relevant today for the history of semiology as for ongoing inquiry into the material and symbolic cultures of post-war France.
