Abstract

As a complement to Eliane Vergnolle's article in this volume on the history of so-called "pilgrimage churches," this brief essay presents geometrical analyses of the plans for three Romanesque chevets: those of Saint-Martin de Tours, Saint-Sernin de Toulouse and the chartrain Ms. 98. All three designs represent the same basic type, and their commonalities suggest the existence of well-defined design principles in the 11th century, but the variations between them show that their designers could explore subtly different geometrical strategies even on such seemingly similar projects.
