Abstract
The stomach accomplishes its motor functions by the interaction of two distinct motor areas: the proximal stomach and the distal stomach. The proximal stomach, with its slow sustained contractions, has a major role in gastric emptying of liquids; whereas the distal stomach, with its peristaltic and terminal antral contractions, has a major role in the gastric emptying of solids. Diseases and operations that disrupt the motility of the proximal stomach lead to altered gastric emptying of liquids, whereas those that disturb distal gastric motility alter gastric emptying of solids. Knowledge of gastric motor physiology and pathophysiology provides a basis for the successful treatment and prevention of the disorders.
