Abstract
The origin of geminate obstruents in Germanic class II weak intensives & iteratives is reexamined in light of difficulties attendant to the traditional analysis of n-assimilation as a solution. Theories that address the verb class's acquisition of an expressive function are reviewed, & a solution is proposed based on the idea that intensives & iteratives were formed as the result of expressive geminates. This solution incorporates several perspectives, including Wilhelm Wissmann's (1932) analysis of the connection between onomatopoetic verbs & intensives & iteratives, A. Martinet's (1937) claim that several Old High German strong verbs with geminate liquids showed expressive content, & Jerzy Kurylowicz's (1957) theory that verbs with geminate sonorants provided the basis from which intensives & iteratives evolved. 3 Tables, 20 References.
