Abstract
Given the importance of social integration for promoting students' psychological flourishing and persistence, this paper explored predictors of emotional connection in close campus friendships. Within a sample of 2,739 undergraduates at 25 institutions, female students had stronger emotional connections with their close friends than did male students, and the weakest emotional connection occurred for male-male friendships. Several pre-college attributes and college experiences were also significant predictors. Implications for student affairs practice are discussed.
