Abstract
Members of the Fortune 1,000 were surveyed regarding their college recruiting programs. Nearly half of the 145 responding firms are concentrated in heavy and light manufacturing and computers. Overall, there was a slight tendency toward centralization of college recruiting functions. The most common means of communicating with prospective applicants is through the company brochure. Some 57% of respondents select their college recruiters at the corporate headquarters, but only 21% treat recruiting as an entry-level assignment. On average, respondents recruit at 47 campuses each year, and about two-thirds have applicant qualifications set by line managers with guidance from the human resource department. Other operational issues evaluated by the survey include: 1. terms and conditions of employment, 2. administrative procedures, and 3. record keeping and evaluation. The survey also examined recruiting effectiveness and relationships between practices and effectiveness.</p>
