Abstract
In semi-darkness, a group stands clustered around a form. Some try to check vital signs—respiration, circulation, status of vital organs—and discuss the situation in hushed voices tinged with anguish. Others nearby are apparently unconcerned. “Breathing seems to be weak,” comes the first report, “and it's getting shallower and more uneven.” “Pulse! The pulse ... I can't find it.” The second voice is anxious, almost frantic. “What are you so wound up about? There's nothing wrong,” a third disdainfully remarks. “What makes you think it's supposed to have one?”
