Abstract
SHOWS THE EMPIRICAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN INDUCED MUSCLE TENSION AND PERFORMANCE IN A PAIRED-ASSOCIATES TASK IN WHICH THE RESPONSE ORIGINALLY CORRECT FOR A GIVEN STIMULUS ITEM IS SWITCHED AFTER AN INITIAL CRITERION IS REACHED. BY ALTERNATING TRAINING AND TEST TRIALS AND BY ASSIGNING SOME SS TO TENSION-DURING-TRAINING GROUPS AND OTHERS TO TENSION-DURING-TEST GROUPS, THE EFFECTS OF TENSION DURING TRAINING AND DURING TESTING ARE SEPARATED AND COMPARED. FOR TENSION-DURING-TEST GROUPS MEASURES OF CORRECT RESPONSE PROBABILITY AND PROPORTION OF ERRORS DUE TO COMPETITION FROM PREVIOUSLY CORRECT RESPONSES REACHED THEIR MAXIMA AT AN INTERMEDIATE LEVEL OF MUSCLE TENSION AND THEN DECREASED AT A HIGHER LEVEL. FOR TENSION-DURING-TRAINING GROUPS ERROR SCORES GREW PROGRESSIVELY LARGER AS TENSION LEVEL WAS INCREASED.
