Abstract
The melting speeds of ice are studied at various length and time scales. At the macroscale, we employ a previous analytical solution for a general ice melting phase change problem. At the microscale, the ice melting speed is obtained by the finite element method with variable time steps. At the nanoscale, the melting speed is calculated via a molecular dynamics simulation with a commonly used water potential function, the TIP5P/E model. It is observed that ice melting speeds are different at various scales. If both length and time scales are considered, the ice melting speed at the nanoscale is faster than those at the microscale and macroscale. If only length scale is considered, it is found that the ice melting speed at the macroscale is faster than those at the microscale and nanoscale. © 2012 American Scientific Publishers.
