Abstract
The characteristics and performance of semiconductor lasers based on cascade and noncascade designs were compared. In particular, the active regions based on intersubband transitions were compared with those based on interband transitions. The design of an 11-μm laser active region, which performs better than intersubband lasers, is presented.
