Abstract
This study investigates how four decades of political change in the People's Republic of China has affected the formats and contents of Chinese periodicals. Four titles were chosen randomly from the Chinese language periodical collections in the Harvard Yenching Library and the University of Iowa Libraries. In each selected title, indicators such as the appearance and usage of foreign languages, the existence and format of advertisements, the expressed interest in foreign countries, and the change in targets, slogans and political drives are examined and analyzed.
