Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of polishing on the accuracy and time of intraoral scans for gold and Co-Cr alloy restorations. Materials and Methods: A study model was created by embedding the root of a resin tooth (mandibular first molar) in a gypsum block. After tooth preparation for a complete crown, optical scans were performed using an intraoral scanner. Crown wax patterns were fabricated using CAD-CAM process, and G and Co-Cr alloy crowns were fabricated using the lost-wax technique. Each restoration underwent polishing stages of airborne particle abrasion, stone bur, medium polishing bur, high polishing bur, and rouge (n of each group = 5). Scans were performed at each stage, and scan times of the crown area were collected. As result analyses, 3D surface error evaluation and scan time assessment were performed. Statistical analysis was conducted using a linear mixed model and Mann-Whitney U test, with a significance level set at 0.05. Results: The scan error values (RMSE) of the crown increased with the progression of polishing for both gold and Co-Cr crowns (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in error values between the two alloys up to the high polishing bur stage, but the error for the Co-Cr crown group increased markedly at the rouge stage (P < 0.001). Scan times increased linearly with each polishing stage, and there were statistically significant differences between the materials at the stone bur and rouge surface treatment levels (P = 0.008). Conclusion: When scanning highly polished metal restorations with an intraoral scanner, the inaccuracy and scan time may increase, necessitating caution.
