Abstract
Improvement in antimicrobial usage through antimicrobial advisory teams is a key element in our battle to control antimicrobial resistance. Many barriers have impeded the development of effective antimicrobial advisory teams. Under the banner of patient safety, we have successfully implemented an effective antimicrobial advisory team at 4 hospitals. We report our findings including barriers to implementation, a system for classifying antibiotic-prescribing errors, and a measurement of compliance with corrective recommendations. Our results suggest that the infectious diseases physicians can play a stronger role in antibiotic stewardship through widespread implementation of antibiotic advisory teams.
