Abstract
The focus of quality patient care monitoring has evolved from reviewing charts and monitoring the environment, to evaluating nursing activities in contrast to standards, and now to evaluating patient outcomes. It involves continuous quality improvement of patient care and the delivery system. The peri- operative nursing division of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), Iowa City, has risen to the challenge of this changing focus in health care and has developed a comprehensive quality assessment/quality improvement (QA/QI) program that allows us to continually examine and improve patient care.
