Abstract
in transplant patients span infectious (Table 1) and noninfectious etiologies. Infectious causes are similar to those in nontransplant populations with some major differences, including more severe symptoms, higher incidence of opportunistic infections, higher likelihood of chronicity, and prolonged shedding.2 Diarrhea in transplant recipients is associated with increased morbidity, including allograft loss and increased mortality.3 This review emphasizes differences in epidemiology, risk factors, and management of gastrointestinal infections in transplant compared with nontransplant populations and provides a stepwise approach to diagnosis of diarrhea in transplant recipients.
