Abstract
Asked 32 male and 32 female undergraduates to judge (a) attractiveness of each person in a hypothetical group, (b) attractiveness of the group as a whole, and (c) importance of each member in the group. Groups consisted of 3 young men, each characterized by brief descriptions, systematically varied in attractiveness. Group attractiveness obeyed the parallelism prediction of integration theory in the no-leader groups; judged group attractiveness was an average of the attractiveness of the individual members of the group. Deviations from parallelism were obtained in the leader groups; these deviations were interpreted in terms of differential weighting in the averaging model. A double leader extremity effect was obtained. Designating 1 person as leader made him more extreme in attractiveness, positive or negative; a similar extremity effect was obtained for group attractiveness. Both leader extremity effects are interpretable in terms of averaging theory.
