Abstract
Previous research on self-disclosure (SD) identifies timing of disclosure as a factor in its attractiveness and indicates that the appropriateness of disclosure is partly defined by social norms relating to discloser's sex. In a 2x2x2 design the present study examined interactive effects of target (subject) sex, discloser (confederate) sex and timing of disclosure as influences on the interpersonal judgements made about a self-disclosing other. Factor analysis revealed the presence of two main factors (likeability of discloser; discloser's mental stability) which nonetheless behaved in relatively independent ways under the conditions of the present study. No main or interaction effects were found on the liking factor, but stability ratings were influenced by target sex, timing of disclosure, and target sex x timing interactions. Whilst previous research received some support from this study, the present conceptualization of the role of SD in ratings of mental stability and of liking was found to be inadequate. Results also suggest that a simple sex-norm interpretation of SD's appropriateness, whilst largely correct, needs to be refined in a number of respects that are clarified by the observation of interactive effects of timing and sex of partners.
