Abstract
The International Center for Orthopaedic Education (ICOE) is the result of the 1992 conference on international orthopaedic education sponsored by the American Orthopaedic Association. The 74 national societies, seven international societies, and 49 countries represented at the conference made a commitment to facilitating an international exchange program for postresidency orthopaedic educational experiences. Since the ICOE's inception in 1994, orthopaedic surgeons from approximately 115 countries have taken advantage of ICOE's services. The opportunities available may be short-or long-term and range in focus from general orthopaedics to any subspecialty. Fellowships include opportunities for direct clinical patient care, observerships, basic science and/or clinical research experiences, teaching opportunities, or service projects offered by orthopaedic departments, individual orthopaedic surgeons, hospitals, orthopaedic national associations, governmental organizations, philanthropic organizations (eg, Orthopaedics Overseas; World Orthopaedic Concern), and orthopaedic implant manufacturers. The original database of programs has evolved into a web site that facilitates communication between applicants and programs. The site now includes a function that automatically matches an applicant's qualifications with program requirements. Excerpts from the testimonials of orthopaedic surgeons who have participated in the program are included in the Appendix.
