Abstract

Increased research is needed on service delivery & diagnostic systems with regard to Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients in rural areas, since rural caregivers now have limited access to services, information, & health care professionals. Needs are particularly acute in the area of counseling & mental-health support services that can assist caregivers in coping with the burdens of assisting AD patients. Specific problem areas for rural AD assistance requiring further examination include: improving access to assistance, enhancing communication between caregivers & professionals, & establishing evaluation & information dissemination mechanisms. In a recent survey, 107 rural caregivers in IA reported relying on a Christian ethic & a concern about privacy, which could prove to be obstacles to increasing professional assistance. J. Cowie
