Abstract
Tested the hypothesis that accessing particular knowledge in long-term memory often involves the making of inferences rather than just the accessing of directly stored facts. The time required by 40 undergraduates to answer questions such as "Can my uncle be my grandmother's son?" supports this hypothesis and provides information about the basic knowledge that Ss have about kinship relations. A production system model of Ss' inference processes provides a good account of the pattern of the response times for problems requiring "yes" answers. In addition, evidence was obtained that Ss also use contradictory information about sex features and may use other specialized strategies when applicable.
