Abstract
Machine layout in manufacturing systems involves assigning machines to sites so that the time and cost of moving material between machines is minimized. The use of machine cells minimizes the transfer of products, components, and tools. The transfer time required by the material handling system (MHS) is proportional to its operating cost. Four types of machine layouts are identified: linear single-row, circular single-row, linear double-row, and multi-row. Available optimal algorithms for the machine layout problem are not suitable for solving large-scale industrial problems. The KBML expert system for solving machine layout problems is described.
