Abstract

The Nanking dialect has (1) an apical vowel that is found in open final syllables occurring after dental sibilants & (2) a retroflex apical vowel that occurs in open or checked finals after retroflex initials. The present paper traces the history of these vowels from Ming & Qing times to the present. It is concluded that (1) has existed in Nankingese since at least Ming times, while (2) developed from earlier [i] in the 19th century. 21 References. Adapted from the source document
