Abstract
Faculty at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health, in partnership with agencies and individuals in a rural town, are applying a lay health advisor intervention that builds on strengths identified in a community. The intervention has adapted lessons learned from a lay health advisor model originally developed to increase breast cancer screening among African-American women. The lay health advisor approach may be particularly appropriate for STD prevention because it can reach populations not easily accessed by health professionals. Describes reasons for implementing the project, the training involved, and evaluation approaches. (Quotes from original text)
