Abstract
In seven conscious dogs, continuous measurements of the left ventricular internal diameter, aortic flow, and mean left atria1 pressure were obtained at rest and during ventricular output curves. End-diastolic and end-systolic diameters increased to a maximum in response to the elevated left atria1 pressure. The average increase was 14.3% =t 3.0 SEM and 7.0% =t 2.1 SEM, respectively, for end-diastolic and end-systolic diameter. Function curves relating volume ejected to internal diameter provided a quantitative relationship between the two variables.
