Abstract
The tradition of service tells us that if we want a better society, we do not buy it. We create it with bonds of trust and mutual appreciation among ourselves through our volunteerism and charitable action. This is the most basic reason for arguing against compensation for trustees of not-for-profit hospitals and systems. A number of other reasons against compensation for trustees are also presented.
