Low Grade Laryngeal Chondrosarcoma of the Cricoid Cartilage: A Case Report

Abstract
Laryngeal chondrosarcomas are a rare class of laryngeal tumor arising from the various cartilages in the larynx. Despite their generally benign nature, removal of laryngeal chondrosarcomas is essential as the tumor often obstructs the larynx resulting in vocal defects and can impede breathing in advanced cases. In this case, we present a 61-yearold male with a low-grade laryngeal chondrosarcoma arising from the cricoid cartilage. The patient presented with a long history of hoarseness accompanied by normal physical exam and lab findings. After CT imaging showed a laryngeal mass, biopsy and histological examination were performed and confirmed a diagnosis of low-grade laryngeal chondrosarcoma arising from the cricoid cartilage. The patient was primarily treated via an anterior commissure laryngoscope with thulium laser resection and further debulking was able to be performed multiple months after the initial procedure during another unrelated neck surgery. The eight-month follow up course resulted in retention of laryngeal function and no recurrence on CT scan. This case provides a thorough look into a chondrosarcoma arising from the larynx with a discussion of workup for these rare airway related tumors.
