Abstract
This review presents evidence which indicates that cessation of physical activity as one ages is not solely a function of age. Rather, there is data to support the contention that the elderly refrain from exercise because of environmental and personal as well as motivational conflicts. The director of an exercise program for elderly clients can alleviate said frustrations by reassuring the elderly that exercise can be done safely, making the benefits of exercise conspicuous, adjusting inaccurate perceptions of physical exertion and making opportunities to exercise more available.
