Abstract
To observe their types of emotional problems and the management problems that they present to attending physicians, seriously burned adult patients received a psychiatric evaluation and were followed closely throughout their hospital course. Reactions such as anxiety, depression, regression and fear of deformity were noted in nearly all patients at some time during the hospital course, and a smaller number became serious management problems owing to delirium. If he has some insight into the nature and causes of these reactions, the attending physician can usually handle them without psychiatric consultation.
A PERSON who has been burned suffers one of the most severe traumas that human beings can survive. The injury itself is frightening, and during his prolonged hospitalization, the victim must face pain, helplessness, dependency and the possibilities of disfigurement, deformity and death. For such patients psychologic problems become integrally interwoven with their physical problems. The physician caring for them must deal not only with shock, electrolyte imbalance, sepsis, nutrition, and wound healing, but also with fear, depression, grief, loss of hope, and psychotic reactions.
Interest in the psychologic reactions of burn victims was aroused by the Coconut Grove fire . . .
