Abstract
The preface of the Qieyun of Lu Fayan, which discusses Chinese metrics, is examined through a comparison of translations by Goran Malmqvist (1968) & Robert Ramsey (1987), with emphasis on how the differences affect the current Western understanding of Qieyun history. Problematic passages are analyzed, dealing with the issues of (1) the number of meetings Lu had with his friends & to what extent they advised him; (2) the fact that Lu is solely responsible for the final version of the Qieyun; (3) Lu's use of earlier lexica in his research; (4) how the Qieyun makes no reference to the existence of norms or standards of pronunciation, despite Malmqvist's inferences to the contrary; & (5) how Lu's research concentrated on a set of formulas for use in writing literature & vocalizing literary texts, & not on the linguistic aspects of speech. 6 References.
