Abstract
The Change in Activities and Interest Index (CAII) was developed to examine empirically the perceived changes that occur in the lives of older adults. To continue to define the properties of the measure and its relevance to socio-emotional selectivity and gerotranscendence theories, this study compares findings on the 30-item CAII from a sample of elders in independent living facilities with previously published findings from a sample of older adults residing in the community. Compared with community-dwelling elders, independent living residents reported greater reductions in Active Instrumental (productive) and Active Social activities, but had similar distribution of reduced and increased activity investment. Further, age and health and depressive symptoms were associated with changes in activities, but not with changes in attitudes congruent with gerotranscendence. This study provides support for theories of aging and identifies the need for future refinements to the CAII.
