Abstract
The asymmetric optical pumping of argon ions accelerating in a magnetic field gradient was observed. Asymmetry in laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) emission from σ states of argon ions was observed and attributed to the combined effects of magnetic-field and ion-velocity gradient. The LIF intensity measurements were normalized to the instantaneous laser power and the magnetic-field direction was reversed. The intensities of Zeeman-split absorption lines in ions accelerating away from the surface of stars, illuminated by continuum radiation from the photosphere, frequently exhibit similar asymmetries.
