Abstract
A violence on television project for the National Cable Television Association is beginning in 1995 to assess the incidence of violence on broadcast and cable television. The study will differ from others in that researchers will be recording both the occurrences of violence and the context in which the violence. Through this methodology, gratuitous violence can be distinguished from violence portrayed in socially constructive programming.
