Abstract
A review of issues in planning & delivering mental health services to elderly in rural areas focuses on the prevalence of mental illness among rural elderly & the current availability & accessibility of services. Several strategies for improving the development & delivery of geriatric mental health services to rural areas are discussed: increasing the number & quality of providers; adapting or developing diagnostic techniques to improve case identification; providing culturally sensitive mental health services; strengthening informal & formal care linkages in rural communities; developing innovative service delivery models building on the strengths of rural settings; & emphasizing fluidity as well as continuity in treatment models. 65 References.
