Abstract
Glass talks about Paul Engle, in collaboration with Iowa writers during a symposium on "The Writer in Mass Culture". Engle as a middle man is situated in the middle in a broader historical sense as a 'vanishing mediator', who serves as bearer of change and social transformation, only to be forgotten once that change has ratified the reality of institutions. Glass states that Engle's vision has become the informing structure of the contemporary literary field.
