Abstract
The establishment of the budgets and the realization of an understanding of cause and effect of changes in cycles of the major biogeochemicals of the troposphere are major challenges facing atmospheric scientists today. This knowledge is important because the chemical composition of the troposphere and, particularly, the presence of certain trace species can greatly influence health, weather, climate, and agriculture. For example, trace species may influence climate through their effects on the radiation balance, visibility by conversion to light scattering aerosols, or the ecosystem through effects such as acid rain formation. To better understand the troposphere, it is necessary to know: (1) which species are present and at what concentrations and with what distribution; (2) which processes control the cycle; (3) how these species interact with climate factors; and (4) how humans impact on the cycle. The answers to these questions must be obtained through a combination of laboratory, field, and modeling studies. Modeling plays an absolutely essential role in unraveling the answers to these questions because it provides a means of closing the loop between field experiment results and our understanding of the chemical and physical processes of trace species in the troposphere.
