Abstract
Professor Michael Moore has presented a deep and thorough examination of the relationship between counterfactual and causal tests, the meeting of which are often taken to be necessary conditions for various sorts of moral and legal responsibility. Moore concludes that one cannot define causal connections in terms of counterfactuals. Nevertheless, he also argues that one might conclude that the assessment of counterfactuals remains a critical part of assessing legal responsibility. Moore is committed to the view that one cannot so easily divorce questions of moral culpability and responsibility from questions concerning what we have caused or how things would have been had we acted differently.
