Abstract

The recently identified existence of a dorsolateral spinothalamic tract of unknown function calls for revision of a classic tenet of pain transmission. Moreover, the newly described direct projection of nociceptive dorsal horn neurons to areas involved in autonomic, visceral, and limbic function, as well as to the thalamus, challenges the belief that ascending pain pathways merely mediate the sensory-discriminative component of pain.
