Abstract
New techniques of molecular diagnosis are being introduced and refined. Methodologies such as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) have a great potential for widespread research and clinical use. Transfusion medicine will be affected by these developments. Possible applications of PCR and related techniques to blood banking practice and hematologic diagnoses are considered in this article.
