Abstract
Hand et al explore three language activities in an inquiry context of interest to science education and in service of science literacy. These are argument in science education, critical stance in science comprehension, and writing in school science. The authors claim that one of the major challenges confronting science education is to shift from an authoritarian sociointellectual discourse to a culture that places strategic language activity, critical thought, and social relevance at the core of science learning.
