Abstract
Next of kin’s wishes and needs are described as important in the health and care services provided by the Norwegian municipalities. However, research shows that the next of kin often feel left out and feel little or no inclusion in communication with the formal service system. Thus, the research question for this study was: What are the next of kin’s experiences of user involvement in the municipal health and care services? Interpretative phenomenological analysis was selected as the method of analysis. The two following categories were identified: (1) The municipal framework makes user involvement difficult, and (2) the complexity of the service needs demands flexible and collaborative solutions. The themes found in this research are discussed in light of previous research and the assumptions and hypotheses as laid out in family systems theory.
